While some people might be apprehensive about volunteering because of the notion that they will have to enter a burning building, or rappel down the side of a mountain, there are many other opportunities which require nothing like that. Television has glamorized the fire and rescue services, almost to the point that the only hero is the person who is rescuing someone, but that is far from the case. What television does not show is the college student who checked all of the equipment earlier to make sure it was good to go or the mechanic who volunteers his spare time making sure the trucks are in good working condition.
